At the small windswept costal settlement of Ākitio, south-east of Dannevirke, a generational farming family is embracing a new direction for their crossbred wool by supplying New Zealand-owned manufacturer Big Save Furniture. Ravensdown visited the Ramsden family on the iconic Moanaroa Station to find out how their wool is transitioning from farm to furniture.

At their recent conference held in Ashburton, South Island Dairy Event (SIDE) ran a workshop on strategies to work with the N-190 cap. With the implementation of nitrogen rules from the Essential Freshwater Policy Package edging closer, one of the most important things a dairy farmer can do to comply is keep reliable records for all solid and liquid N fertiliser applications on their properties (excluding effluent applications). Kicking this record keeping into gear will also be beneficial when creating a Farm Environment Plan – which all farmers may be expected to have in place by 2025.
