It's time to lime

Share:

Why lime?

Soil acidification is a natural result of pastoral farming, and these acidic soils can be detrimental to plant growth. For optimal plant growth, your soil pH should sit somewhere between 5.8 and 6.0. Applying lime will increase the pH of your soil, typically taking around one tonne per hectare to increase soil pH by 0.1 units.

Lime also has the following benefits for your soil:

  • Increased biological activity, both macro and micro, in soil, this increases the rate of accumulation and breakdown of soil organic matter, allowing nutrients such as N, P and S to become more readily available for plant growth.
  • Decreases aluminium toxicity – when soil pH sits below 5.5, aluminium becomes plant available and can be toxic to plants by restricting the growth of plant roots.
  • Molybdenum becomes more plant available with a higher soil pH, Mo is important for nitrogen metabolization by clover and other legumes.
  • As Lime (Calcium Carbonate) breaks down, it allows Calcium to become available to pastures.

Why now?

Pastoral responses to lime are the highest during summer and autumn. Applying now will raise your soil's pH and allow plants to grow healthily, increasing your pasture's productivity.

Our Lime

Our Quarry Managers strive to produce quality Lime for all applications, with products created to ensure ease of spreading both on the ground and from the air. We also produce RutRock, an effective solution for centre pivots and animal water access, with the dryer months being an ideal time to apply.
